The Wild West (Old West) is a period that took place between the 1850s and 1910s during the American frontier, with its main focus on the Western part of United States, especially of the Southwest. This was a time when American expansion flourished from the English colonial settlements of the early 17th century, and began after the Civil War. The period of the Wild West is frequently portrayed by modern media as life full of violence, lawlessness, and dramatized romance.
The myths surrounding the Wild West often times include glamorized version of the iconic "Cowboys", frequently involved in gun battles with Indians and outlaws, as well as gun-slinging quick-draw duels to settle scores. The stories and events from the Wild West inspired a new genre of film, known as the Westerns. The Western genre has made its way into popular culture - including movies, art, music, dance, televisions shows, novels, magazines, short stories, poetry, theater, comics, video games, radio, songs, toys, and costumes; all of which is still influential in today's society. Themes from the Wild West cinematic often include heroism, vigilantism, and anarchism.
In this collection, we will explore past stories and tales from the Wild West, both fictional and non-fictional, including legendary figures such as Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, Kit Carson, Billy the Kid, Davy Crockett, Jesse James, and Pawnee Bill.
