The Waldensian movement started in France towards the end of the 12th century. Its followers embraced simplicity and poverty as essential to observing the teachings of Christ. Because it renounced various key Catholic tents and allowed lay people (including women) to preach, founder Peter Waldo and his disciples were excommunicated in 1184 by Pope Lucius III. The Waldensian faith is sometimes regarded as a forerunner of the Reformation in Europe. Despite persecution, it gained strength during the Middle Ages, spreading across the continent. Their preachers were called barbes (uncles) to distinguish them from Catholic priests, who were called ‘fathers.’
In the 16th century, they joined with the Reform Movement. Persecution intensified, with pastors, movement leaders, and owners of Waldensian bookshops being burned at the stake. In 1545, over 2,000 of them were massacred at Mérindol in France, a tragedy that the region has never forgotten. Another massacre occurred in 1560 in Calabria, Italy: a violent military campaign decimated the Waldensians and forced all survivors to renounce their faith.
Despite these bloody challenges to their survival, the Waldensian movement survived in a tiny region of Europe. In 1975 the Waldensian and Methodist Churches merged in Italy. There are also Waldensian churches in Latin America. This collection contains over 112 books about the Waldensian movement and martyrdom throughout Christianity. These original and authentic texts yield valuable insights into a little-known and extremely tragic aspect of world history.
