The Titanic ship is one of the most popular shipwrecks in history. The ocean liner which left on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City, sunk into the ocean floor after about three hours from hitting an iceberg. It is the shipwreck with the highest number of deaths, as it claimed the lives of about 1500 passengers and crew members. The tragic event which happened in 1912 have been recorded in different articles. Different persons have written varying accounts on how the “unsinkable” ocean vessel sank into the belly of the ocean. A Hollywood blockbuster by Canadian filmmaker, James Cameron, provided a detailed and intense movie on how it happened, as narrated by survivors and explorers.
There are varied speculative reasons on what caused the RMS Titanic to hit an iceberg and subsequently sank into the ocean. Books and articles have been published to explain the reasons for the capsizing of the ship. Some notable explanations provided include that the captain may have dismissed the warnings of the iceberg. There are high threats of iceberg around the path of the Titanic’s crossing owing to the extreme weather in the North Atlantic during the time. According to reports, it is believed that the captain received more than six messages from different ships going through that same region of huge sizes of moving ice. However, the captain chose to ignore the calls and warnings.
Another reason that resulted in the sinking of the ship is the high speed of the ship. According to investigations and reports from survivors, the RMS Titanic was moving at a speed of 22 knots before hitting the iceberg. At such speed, it is near impossible to avert the ship from the iceberg. Sub-standard building materials, such as the steel, and the wrong turn of the ship can also be attributed to the cause of the shipwreck. This vast collection contains comprehensive articles with vivid accounts on the event of the Titanic tragedy.
