The Electrical Experimenter was a pioneering American technical science magazine launched in May 1913 by Hugo Gernsback, a Luxembourgian-American inventor and publisher. It succeeded Gernsback’s earlier publication, Modern Electrics, and was initially published by the Electro Importing Company before becoming part of Experimenter Publishing in 1915. The magazine was notable for its monthly schedule and its focus on scientific articles related to radio and electrical experimentation.
Under Gernsback's editorial direction, The Electrical Experimenter featured a blend of technical content and imaginative fiction. Between 1917 and 1919, inventor Nikola Tesla contributed several articles and serialized parts of his autobiography in the magazine. This editorial approach helped lay the groundwork for the development of science fiction as a recognized genre.
In August 1920, the magazine was renamed Science and Invention, reflecting an expanded focus that included general science, chemistry, and mechanics, in addition to its core emphasis on electrical experimentation. The publication continued under this new title until August 1931. The Electrical Experimenter played a significant role in popularizing scientific knowledge and fostering public interest in emerging technologies during the early 20th century, leaving a lasting impact on both science communication and early science fiction.
