The Sumerian language was the most prominent spoken in Summer, a southern city of Mesopotamia from around the 4th millennium BC until about 2000 BC. It was after this time that Akkadian became an alternative language. Nonetheless, the Sumerian language was still adopted in the writing of religious and artistic expressions. More so, it was until the 1st century AD that numerous scholars stopped utilizing the ancient language. It is gradually becoming lost as it has no link or association with any known language. The Sumerian cuneiform is known as one of the ancient writing systems. The origin of this unique writing style can be traced back to around 8,000 BC. It started from the use of different emblems and pictographs, which were used to depict trade goods, products, and livestock on clay tablets.

Sumerians initially produced little tokens from the clay to indicate these items. The tokens were packed and stored together in enclosed clay envelopes, and to display the content, the token is press hard against the clay to depict the goods or livestock. They eventually found out that they did not necessarily need the tokens, as they could mold the symbols in the clay. This also inspired them to discover a numerical system to indicate multiple elements, rather than repeating them. This was how the Sumerian cuneiform started and with time, it became a full writing method.

Some original texts written with this system began around 3,300 BC, from the city of Jamdat and Uruk.  The term ‘cuneiform' which means ‘wedge-shaped’ was coined from the Latin word “Cuneus”. The idea of this name stems from the strokes formed by the pressing of the tokens. Discover more about the history of this ancient writing technique in this vast collection.
