During the late 1800s and the early 1900s, steam engines were the source of power for locomotives and trains. The railway transportation brought industrialization to different parts of the world. Besides the rail transport system, steam engines have been integrated into coal mines. They are also used for pumping water out of these mines.
What is a Steam Engine? This is a mechanical machine that operates with the use of power generated from hot steam to perform diverse mechanical work. Steam engines were outstanding inventions that brought civilization to humanity. It is often ranked among the best innovations that have ever been produced by man.
How does a steam engine work? The primary source of the energy that powers the steam engine is coal. The coal is placed in a furnace where it is heated at a very high temperature and this generates heat. The heat is then used to boil water contained in the vessel. This heat from the coal boils the water to the extent that it changes its state to steam. Subsequently, the hot steam evaporating from the boiling water is channeled into a chamber containing a cylinder and piston. The energy from the hot steam causes the cylinder and piston to move in a reciprocating manner. The machine to be powered is attached to the piston. As the hot steam creates the reciprocating motion, the machine (for instance, a locomotive train) is powered.
