The publisher Skywald Publications was a short-lived but influential American comics company, operating roughly from 1970 to 1975, that made its mark primarily through black-and-white horror anthology magazines such as Nightmare, Psycho, and Scream. The name “Skywald” itself is a portmanteau of its founders’ surnames: former Marvel production manager Sol Brodsky (“Sky”) and entrepreneur Israel Waldman (“Wald”).

Skywald sought to carve out a distinctive niche by developing what editor Al Hewetson called the “Horror-Mood” — a style marked by a moody atmosphere, psychological horror, and striking black-and-white artwork, differentiating itself from both mainstream superhero comics and other horror competitors of its day. Influenced by gothic and weird fiction traditions, the titles featured both original stories and reprint material, with contributions from many noted writers and artists of the era.

Despite the creative ambition and the strong roster of talent, Skywald faced significant commercial challenges: distribution difficulties, competition with larger publishers, and the costs of magazine production all weighed on its sustainability. Ultimately the company ceased publishing in early 1975, leaving behind a small but fervently collected body of work that continues to be appreciated by horror-comics aficionados and scholars of the genre.

In short, Skywald Publications stands as a concentrated burst of experimental horror-comics energy — innovative in tone and bold in execution, yet constrained by the realities of the comics market of its era.
