Secret societies have been with us since the beginning of time, and their members, which were usually men, have included world leaders, royalty, and even a Founding Father or two. These societies include (but are not limited to) the Freemasons, the Knights Templar, the Knights of Pythias, and the Bavarian Illuminati.
Their secrecy has been a source of both intrigue and alarm. The Freemasons in particular have been the subject of conspiracy theories for centuries, with some theorists claiming that Jack the Ripper was a Freemason whose crimes were concealed by high-ranking Masons. Its overall perception was so sinister that in 1898 a two-volume series appeared called Luciferianism or Satanism in English Freemasonry. Similarly, the Illuminati has been accused of instigating the French Revolution and, in modern times, being involved in the JFK assassination. Founded on May 1, 1776, its logo was supposed to be an all-seeing eye floating over a developing pyramid: an image that also appears on the U.S. dollar bill!
If you’ve always wanted to know more about the history behind these groups, look no further than the vintage books on this collection. From casual histories to in-depth examination of secret society practices, you’ll come away with more knowledge on the subject than you believed possible. Take a look at the sample pages taken from just some of these books in the collection.
