IF Magazine (short for If: Worlds of Science Fiction) was an American science fiction magazine first published in 1952 by Quinn Publications. It emerged during the golden age of pulp and digest magazines, offering readers imaginative stories about space exploration, futuristic societies, and speculative science. Though it initially struggled to gain recognition against giants like Astounding Science Fiction and Galaxy, IF found success in the 1960s under editor Frederik Pohl, who elevated its literary quality and focus on social themes. During Pohl’s tenure, the magazine won the Hugo Award for Best Science Fiction Magazine three consecutive years (1966–1968), a rare achievement that reflected its growing influence in the genre. IF published notable authors such as Robert Heinlein, Larry Niven, Harlan Ellison, and James Blish, showcasing both established and emerging voices in speculative fiction. The magazine ultimately merged with Galaxy Science Fiction in 1974, but its legacy endures as a publication that bridged the gap between pulp adventure and thoughtful, idea-driven science fiction.
