The definition of an athlete is one that participates in one or more sports, involving a combination of physical strength, speed, and stamina. Athletes can complete as professionals or as amateurs. Professional athletes develop rigorous training regimes to keep their bodies in peak physical shape in order to complete in their sport, including strict dietary regiments to maintain a specified body weight and composition.

Athletes that regularly partake in isotonic exercises are more likely to have a larger mean left ventricular end-diastolic volume - the measurement of stroke volume to find out how much blood is pumped from the left ventricle heart after each heartbeat. Compared to the general population that do not exercise regularly, athletes are less likely to be depressed, and they visit physical therapists and masseurs more often due to sore muscles and strains resulting from their demanding physical sports. Athletes that train for longer endurance and stamina requires less calorie intake than other athletes.
