The violin is a wooden string intrument first discovered in Italy around the early part of the 16th century.
Other string intruments of the 15h and 16th centuries, such as the rebec, vielle, and lira da braccio may have given rise to the invention of the violin.
Since its discovery, the violin is a prominent instrument in various genres of music. It is most widely played in Western classical music, from chamber music to orchestras.
A violin usually has a hollow wooden body, with parts made from various types of wood. A luthier or violinmaker, is a person that builds and repairs violins.
A bow maker, also known as archetier, is a person who makes or repairs the bow for violins.
