Transportation has and is still posing a major challenge to mankind, most especially with the constant movement of people and products. It has been a pivotal part of human needs that needs a sense of urgency for advancement and development. The history of airplanes dates back more than a thousand years. Wings were attached to the arm, to imitate the birds of the air. However, this could not provide the needed flight for man. The use of hot air or hydrogen gas balloons was the next attempt by man to fly. But this mode of the flight was not sustainable as it depends on the direction of the wind to move from here to there. From earlier forms like a kite to attempts at tower jumping to supersonic machines, to air jets to mention but a few. All these were not enough to satisfy the need for transportation by air. One of the earliest and possibly the most popular inventions on airplanes was by the Wright Brothers in 1903.
One may ponder how does an airplane work? Why a rock thrown upward falls whilst a heavy object like an airplane flies against gravity? The four principles of aerodynamics (lift, weight, thrust, and drag) explains the above statement. On thrust and drag, thrust either caused a propeller or a jet engine is a dynamic force that pushes an airplane forward through space. The opposing force DRAG is the friction that resists the motion of an object moving through fluid or space.
