The mining of coal involves the process of extracting the deposits from the surface of the earth, as well as under the surface. The importance of the energy content coal to humanity was predominant in the 18th and 19th centuries; the major use was for the generation of electricity. Some production industries such as cement and steel also benefited from coal. They use it as a fuel to extract iron for the ores and for manufacturing cement.

The mining process has recorded tremendous growth over the years. Starting from the crude methods, such as digging, tunneling, and the manual extraction of coal on carts of primitive men, the processes have advanced to the massive open cut and long wall mines. The present procedures for coal mining involve trucks, hydraulic jacks, conveyors, draglines, and shearers.

There are two major extraction methods for coal mining; they include surface and underground mining. The former is subdivided into the strip, contour, and mountaintop removal mining. Underground mining has six sub-divisions that includes continuous, blast, and retreat mining. One important term in coal mining and its extraction is ‘colliery’. The meaning of this word is relative to the location. In Australia, it simply means an underground mine.

Environmental impacts of the mining of this mineral are also an interesting aspect. It is imperative to identify the extraction methods and other mining processes that may affect the environment and the health of people in the long run.

Special articles in this DVD collection includes topics in the history of coal mining in Britain, general terms used in coal mining, coal mining manuals for managers and supervisors, modern methods and practices in coal mining, and the science of coal and its uses.

Take a look at the sample pages taken from just some of these books in the collection.
