Latin is considered a classical language, part of the Italic branch from the Indo-European languages. It originated in Latium, a region that was part of Rome. During the Roman Republic era, it was a widely spoken language in Italy and throughout the western Roman Empire. Many words of the English dictionary are derived from the Latin language, especially in studies such as science, medicine, law, and theology.
Latin is a highly inflected language; its alphabet comes from the Etruscan, Greek, and Phoenician alphabet. The language consists of 6 tenses, 4 verb conjugations, 3 persons, 2 voices, 3 distinct genders, 6 to 7 noun cases, 2 to 3 aspects, 3 moods, 5 declensions, and 2 numbers.
Latin is the official language of the Vatican City (Holy See), as well as the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church.
