The Hebrew language is a Northwest Semitic language that originated in Israel. Over 9 million people today from around the world speaks the Modern Hebrew language. The earliest known evidence of the Hebrew language can be traced back from the 10th century BCE period. It is part of the Afrosiatic language family, and is the only Canaanite language still spoken today.
Hebrew is a successful example of a revived "dead language" because it had ceased to be used in everyday spoken language between 200 and 400 CE. It survived the medieval period due to its use in Jewish liturgy, rabbinic literature, and Jewish poetry and commerce. By the turn of the 19th century, with a rise in Zionism, the Hebrew language was revived.
It became the main language of the Yishuv, followed by the formation of the State of Israel. The official language of the State of Israel is Modern Hebrew. Pre-modern Hebrew is still used for prayer and study in Jewish culture from around the world. Approximately, 90% of Israeli Jews are proficient in Hebrew, with 70% highly proficient in the language.
In this collection, we will learn and study the origins of the Hebrew language, history, lexicon, grammar, vocabulary, characters, ancient texts, holy scriptures, literature, religion, origins, and its use in the Holy Bible.
