The Boy Scouts movement began in the early 20th century, founded by British Army officer Robert Baden-Powell, who published Scouting for Boys in 1908 as a guide for teaching outdoor skills, self-reliance, and moral character to youth. Inspired by his military experiences and earlier experimental camps, the movement quickly spread across Britain and beyond, with local patrols forming into national organizations. By 1910, the Boy Scouts of America was established, adapting Baden-Powell’s ideas for an American context. The organization emphasized camping, hiking, first aid, and community service, fostering discipline, teamwork, and leadership. Over time, Scouting expanded globally, creating a worldwide brotherhood of scouts with millions of members across diverse cultures. While the program has evolved to include modern activities and coeducational participation in many countries, its core values of preparedness, service, and respect for nature remain central, making the Boy Scouts one of the most influential youth organizations in history.
