Sussex, a historic county in southeastern England, has a rich and layered history that spans from prehistoric times through the modern era. Originally inhabited by Celtic tribes, it became part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of the South Saxons in the 5th century, from which the county derives its name. Over the centuries, Sussex saw Viking raids, Norman conquest, and the development of prominent towns such as Chichester, Lewes, and Hastings—the latter famously the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings. Its genealogy is deeply intertwined with the land, featuring long-established families whose records appear in parish registers, manorial documents, and wills, reflecting both rural agrarian life and the influence of the gentry. Sussex’s coastal location also fostered maritime trade, fishing, and smuggling, all of which shaped the social and economic history of its inhabitants.
