The basic definition of a Clan is the group of people bound by a similar surname. These persons may be related by real blood or family ties or by professed kinship. One of the common attributes linked with Clans is land, which can be within Scotland where they lived. In ancient times, the primary source of wealth in Scotland was cattle and this is often the major reason for the frequent inter-clan disputes. Within the Scotland clan, there is usually a central member perceived as the leader and clan members consider him as the leader or the chieftain. With the power and authority of leadership in their disposals, these chieftains functioned as judge, defender, and king, exhibiting control over the land. The dominance of this leader increased as the clan conquers more territory and expands their region, as the new people pledge allegiance and adopt the name of the clan.
With such conquering and dominating practice, tracing the history of clans is multifarious and connected, one with another. Discovering the specific clan a Scottish belongs to would be dependent on the period of history considered. The disputes and rivalries that existed in ancient times is the reason associated with the difficulty in tracing clans in Scotland. Fortunately, there is no occurrence of such feuds in this modern day. The battle of Culloden abolished the political system practiced by the clans in Scotland. The battle occurred in 1746 when King George II lost his royal soldiers to the Jacobite rebellion. This fight caused the most horrific outcomes, as the majority of Scottish troops were lost in the battle. The defeat gave control of Scotland to the English and the culture of clans ceased. An amazing feature of Scottish clans is that each had its own tartan and seal. The design of this tartan or seal is often determined by family history.
In this collection, we will explore the history behind the Scottish highlands and the highland clans that inhabit the lands. Learn about the various different family of clans, including their culture, traditions, customs, language, poetry, art, music, and literature.
