The history of the Romany, often referred to as Gypsies, is a story of migration, resilience, and cultural preservation. Originating in northern India around 1,000 years ago, the Romany people gradually migrated westward, reaching Europe by the 14th century. Along the way, they developed a distinct language, Romani, and maintained rich traditions in music, craftsmanship, and oral storytelling. Despite their contributions to European culture, Romany communities have historically faced discrimination, persecution, and forced assimilation, particularly during the Holocaust, when thousands were killed. Over centuries, they adapted to diverse regions while preserving a strong sense of identity, often living in nomadic or semi-nomadic patterns. Today, the Romany continue to navigate challenges of marginalization, yet their cultural heritage—including music, dance, and artisanal skills—remains influential and celebrated across the world.
