The very first Hammond organ was invented back in 1935 in Chicago by an American engineer named Laurens Hammond. Hammond applied for patent 1,956,350 for an "Electrical Musical Instrument" the previous year, and introduced the very first model, Hammond Organ Model A the following year.
The original model was mainly marketed to churches as a lower-cost alternative to the wind-driven pipe organ or piano. Between 1960 and 1970, the Hammond organ became the standard keyboard instrument in blues, jazz, gospel, and rock music. Prior to 1975, various models were manufactured that mainly used sliding drawbars to vary sounds. Sound is generated by creating an electric current from rotating a metal tonewheel, and then strengthening the signal with an amplifier. The Leslie speaker is often paired with the Hammond organ.
Over 2 million Hammond organs have been produced. The most popular model is the Hammond B-3 organ. The Hammond B-3 organ was made popular by professional jazz musician Jimmy Smith, which inspired a new generation of organ players during the 1960s and 1970s.
