This vast collection contains written works and illustrations of heraldry from historic times. The use of heraldry has been an ancient tradition, especially in European countries. In places like Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and England, the use of family crests and emblems is predominant. It serves as a symbol that represents the family. People place them on their flags and banners. In certain climes, other names that identify and are similar to a family crest include the coat of arms or shield of arms. Most countries have this coat of arms, which contains certain elements, objects, or animals that symbolize virtues and things the country believe.
Presently, people conveniently interchange “coat of arms” and “family crest”. During the Middle Ages and the medieval era, a term that had prominence in the custom of Europeans was Heraldry. It simply involves the announcing of Knights by heralds during a jousting or combat competition. Family crests served as a symbol that helped spectators differentiate one knight from the other. The design of the emblem is always printed on the armor, shield, and helmet of the knight. Some even wore capes that had the print of their family crest. The illustrations and paintings of knights during the medieval period also showed that they also decorate their horses with gears bearing their family crest.
You can see the family crest as a form of a custom stamp or a trademark. The first male child from his father always inherits it. Sometimes, sons tend to design a replica of the original family crest with extra design features to represent their families. This is known as Cadency. From this collection, you can discover and learn different family crests and emblems that have been in existence.
